Modern Ancoats is a compelling mix of old and new. The city has not only managed to retain many of the area’s historic buildings, it has managed to repurpose them for business and/or residential use. This has been combined with sensitive new building to create one of Manchester’s most desirable areas.
Located about a mile North of Manchester Piccadilly, Ancoats is not on the Metrolink light rail, however it does have a tram service. The local station is branded as “New Islington” and the journey takes about 15 minutes. Ancoats also has plenty of local buses.
Ancoats is one of the more affluent towns surrounding the city of Manchester and was once the world’s first industrial suburb. Whilst suffering the same industrial decline as many of its neighbours, its close proximity to one of the more fashionable areas of Manchester has helped to give it a massive boost through investment and regeneration.
A section of Ancoats was designated as a conservation area, and as such there are number of buildings that have been listed including several mills and churches as well as the Crown and Kettle pub and the Daily Express Building.
Those looking for a treat for their ears can choose from St Peter’s Church, which is home to the Halle Orchestra or the Band on the Wall music venue on Swan Street. If you prefer a bit of a giggle, then pay a visit to the Frog and Bucket comedy club on Oldham Street.
There is also an independent theatre and a TV studio in the area, and Cutting Room Square is a wonderful open space decorated with public art and benches.
Ancoats is now thought of as one of the hippest neighbourhoods in the UK, and it is considered to be a serious foodie district. You can choose from indie cafes, restaurants and bars who have a focus on high-quality, artisan products. You can find everything here from Neapolitan pizza to Vietnamese pho and everything in between.
As you would expect in such a modern area, there are a number of nightclubs in Ancoats including Sankeysand Mantra Live. There are plenty of music venues in the area of every sort for you to enjoy.
