Oldham is a diverse part of Greater Manchester that sits in amongst the stunning Pennines. Much of its growth came during the Industrial Revolution due to its strong textile manufacturing industry. Industry has now left, and Oldham is a residential town that is transforming into a centre for further education and the performing arts due to its theatrical history. There are now a number of theatres, a museum and music school.
The town centre of Oldham has been through some extensive renovation and now has a great concentration of retail and cultural facilities. Town Square and Spindles are two large shopping centres that will provide endless fun for the average shopaholic.
Oldham’s Old Town Hall is a Grade II listing building in the Georgian neo-classical style, and history buffs will know it as the place that Winston Churchill made his inaugural acceptance speech when he was first elected to Parliament. The building no longer acts as a political building as it fell into disrepair, and after redevelopment it is now a multiplex cinema.
Sports lovers will find the homes of Oldham Athletic Football Club, and there is also a Rugby League team and a fencing club.
There are claims that Oldham was the birthplace of the first fish and chip shop, so it is unsurprising that there are a number of establishments offering this British favourite. If you are looking for something more cosmopolitan, then Oldham boasts restaurants from all around the world. From family friendly to themed restaurants, there is something to suit everyone.
If you are more of a night owl then there are also a number of nightclubs and bars that will keep you entertained into the early hours.
