Irlam is located in Salford on the north bank of the Manchester Ship Canal. It is only 8 miles to Manchester, meaning many facilities are in easy reach. Irlam grew as an inland port and was a major part of the steel industry. It still has a large farming community in the north of the town, whilst the southern area is more residential. There is a large employment base on the Northbank Industrial Estate.
The main shopping area in Irlam can be found of Fairhills Road. On a sporting front, the town has a semi-professional football club in the form of Irlam F.C. and the team plays in the North West Counties League. There is also the Acorn Sports and Art Centre and the Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre where there is a large swimming pool and various sporting facilities. For a slightly slower pace, there is an angling club and some good river fishing spots.
Irlam has plenty of places to eat, drink and be merry, with restaurants serving Indian, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian food, as well as lovely traditional tea rooms. There are also traditional cafes which are perfect for lunch or a quick bite. Irlam also boasts a number of popular pubs which have a friendly family atmosphere and often serve food.
