Although it’s less than five miles SouthEast of Manchester city centre, Reddish misses out on the Metrolink. Instead, it has a train station. In fact, technically it has two, but one is used almost exclusively for freight. Journey time from Reddish North to Manchester Piccadilly is between 10 and 15 minutes. Reddish also has an extensive bus service and is just off the M60.
The transport links to Manchester (and Sheffield) mean that Reddish is largely a commuter town. That said, it does have quite a vibrant local economy. There aren’t many large employers in the area, but there are a lot of recognizable brand names and numerous independent, small businesses.
Having seen rapid growth during the Industrial Revolution, Reddish remains a large and busy town. It is a densely populated area near to the more affluent parts of Greater Manchester, making it an appealing area to both live and work in. It has plenty of facilities and things to do, which explains why so many people choose to set up home here.
There are many landmarks that show Reddish’s industrial past, including former textile mill Houlsworth Mill and the area around it is now designated as a conservation area. The Houldsworth Square shopping area contains a great number of small shops and banks.
Reddish is home to a library and the ground floor of the fire station doubles as a community centre. Reddish Vale country park has always been renowned for its botanical interest and is a great source of interesting wild flowers and wildlife.
As home to a number of different breweries over the years, Reddish has several pubs in the area. There are also some working men’s and political clubs which have been home to other institutions in the past.
The Reddish restaurant scene is a diverse one, encompassing everything from Sicilian to Thai cuisine. There are some great takeaways if you prefer a quiet night in and some wonderful family-friendly options.
